Prague is really cool. In recent years, it has become more and more of a travel destination for Americans visiting Europe, which is refreshing, since it’s traditionally only been Western Europe. Prague is only 3 hours from where I lived, but I didn’t make it up there until around 10 months of living in Bratislava. John and I rented a car and headed up through Prague on our way to meet our friend Bob in Berlin.
We only spent a day in Prague, but it was lovely. It gives you a fair taste of Central Europe, while still feeling quite Western. The Vltava River flows through the center of the city garners much attraction for restaurants and tourism. A good majority of the history remains intact through the architecture, which is surprising considering the number of wars, regime changes, and many years of Communism it had to endure.
My recommendations? Find somewhere to eat or get a drink along the river. Definitely visit Prague Castle, along with St. Vitus Cathedral and a walk across the iconic Charles Bridge (learn the interesting story of it’s construction and history before you walk across). You’re likely to find a market or food stands of some kind in the Old Town Square, so definitely take time to wander around and soak in the Slavic culture of Czechia (if you didn’t know, the country of “Czech Republic” officially changed their name to “Czechia” in 2017!).
